April was a truly staggering month in terms of video game sales in the United States, and the huge growth in video game hardware was particularly noteworthy. In April 2020, consumers spent $420 million on new gaming devices (up 163% from the previous year), the highest figure since April 2008 ($427 million). The Nintendo Switch was once again the best-selling product in both single units and dollars. According to NDP analyst Matt Piscatella, Nintendo Switch’s annual sales numbers are the highest in US history. The previous peak was reached by the Nintendo Wii between April 2009 and April.
In April 2020, total video game spending was $1.5 billion, up 73% from April last year. This is a new record for video game spending in April, breaking the record of $1.2 billion in April 2008. For the year, the industry reported a $4.5 billion increase in consumer spending, compared to $4.017 billion the year before. Year after year, all market segments, including hardware, software and accessories.
To everyone’s surprise, Final Fantasy VII Remake was the best-selling software in April 2020. This highly anticipated game was the third most popular game of the year, after Animal Crossing: New Horizons on 2 and Call of Duty : Modern Warfare 2 comes in first place. Below are the top 20 best-selling games in the United States as of April 2020, compiled by NPD Group and Venturebeat. Nintendo’s first part games don’t show digital sales, so they may still score higher than the ones shown:

NPD tracks physical retail sales, but also sources digital data directly from publishers. But not all companies are participating. For example, Nintendo is not sharing its first batch of digital sales, and Activision Blizzard is not making its sales available to Battle.net. This table also does not include microtransactions, subscriptions, or anything other than the sale of the complete set. With this caveat in mind, this is best viewed as a very useful snapshot of a much more dynamic industry.
