Conventional games always aim to train the player on what he knows. But at a time when most answers are found through internet searches, it might be more interesting to see what players don’t know exactly and how long they can survive in a sea of disinformation. This one combines in Fibbage XL, another in a long line of favorite Jackbox games. Originally released in 2015 (2017 on Switch) and made famous in the The Jackbox Party Pack collection, this modern dictionary game is now available in the Nintendo eShop as a standalone game for those who wish to purchase the game separately from the full package.
Using the functionality of jackbox-type smart devices, up to eight on-screen players are challenged to answer an obscure trivia question not with a correct answer, but with an answer that sounds right. Each answer is then displayed anonymously (with the correct answer), and players have a limited amount of time to figure out the truth. Players earn points if they manage to sniff out the correct answer, and even more points for any player who is tricked into choosing their lie. It lasts three rounds, and the user with the most points at the end is declared the winner. This special edition, Fibbage XL, is filled with extra questions and even more user-friendly features like vibration testing.
While previous Jackbox titles were largely dictated by irreverence and thematic charm, Fibbage is a very simple concept and simplifies the process by focusing on the participants. The goal is to use your knowledge combined with contextual clues to confuse other players and score the most points. The result is a great party title with a surprising amount of nuance for a game you control from your smartphone.
However, in a way this intelligent device interacting with the Jackbox is also the biggest obstacle. Since the only way to interact with the game is to access the Jackbox website with a smart device, you won’t get past the title screen without an internet connection. This has been accepted in the jackbox headers from the beginning, so it’s not surprising at all. For those who don’t know, note that this name does not have the same functionality as the typical switch name. Given the portability of the Nintendo Switch, it would be great to see Jackbox put its feet up in standalone versions of these games. Since large gatherings are still incredibly rare, the ability to play with COM players or via Nintendo Switch Online would immediately justify the price.

Final thoughts : GRAND
Jackbox has built a party game empire with his brand, and Fibbage XL is one of his best products. I’ve never been to a party where Fibbage hasn’t been an instant success, and the ability to pull the game out of my pocket anywhere I have a desktop and Wi-Fi is an incredible prospect.
