Subnautica has been around for a long time. And because it has stood the test of time, it has become one of the most advanced survival relics in the open world.
The game itself already has a lot to offer. But what’s even better is that you can use mods to further customize your work.
So if you’re convinced to take Subnautica all the way to your liking, let’s take a look at the best mods you should try out to start this journey.

30. Map
Choose this mode
Subnautica’s survival mechanics are very popular, especially since the game doesn’t always tell you where to go or what to do.
Exploration is so exciting because you have the freedom to discover what you want.
While this may seem appealing to survival veterans, it can make the game intimidating to newcomers.
So, with this map mod, you can make your way through the map looking less overwhelming.
It simply adds a map to your handheld, which you can access at any time.
29. New Biomemap
Choose this mode
Another thing you absolutely must have is the new biome map.
This module takes over the Biome mode, which is already in the above mod, on the map, making everything much easier to read and follow.
It adds many important details, such as entrances to cities, spawning grounds of enemies, shipwrecks and more, making it much easier to plan your routes if there are places you want to revisit.
28. Miniature map
Select this mode
As if these mods weren’t enough, the next one even adds its own mini map, so your immediate surroundings are always available in your HUD.
Install these three map mods and you’ll never have to worry about where you are again.
27. Secure automatic backup
Choose this mode
Honestly, I don’t see any game that doesn’t have an auto-save feature.
It’s just something that has become second nature in the game, as I’m used to manually closing myself without saving.
Secure Autosave simply adds an auto-save feature to the game. This way you have less to worry about.
26. MeerKwikSlots
Select this mode
Next time there will be another good taste of life.
As the modder himself explains: it just doesn’t make sense that Subnautica gives you 9 tools, but only 5 fast slots to use.
Okay, let’s face it: having enough fast slots for everything is not a luxury you normally have.
In Subnautica, however, this is not necessarily the case, as the MoreQuickSlots mod gives you a total of 12 item access slots at DeepL that you can easily access with simple hotkeys.
25. EasyCraft
Choose this mode
Craftsmanship is a part of almost every survival game. But that can get pretty nasty in Subnautica.
And while in most games you can quickly make an object with plans, in Subnautica it just means that the ability to make that object is unlocked.
EasyCraft offers a simple solution that allows you to create products from drawings in no time.
The mod even automatically retrieves the resources you need from neighboring stores when needed, speeding up the process considerably.
24. Automatic sorting gates
Choose this mode
This brings us to another annoying aspect of the game: inventory management.
The quest for supplies is always interesting, as you never know what new creatures or environments you will encounter.
Sorting shipments to the base, however, is another story.
It can also take a lot of time to organize everything. But thanks to the RandyKnapp modulator, AutosortLockers can do it for you.
The mod allows you to build color-coded storage cabinets where you can specify what types of items are in each cabinet.
Plus, you can build a permanent automatic sorting receiver that makes it easy to unload what you’ve just collected and easily watch it distribute everything to the right bins.
23. Resource monitor
Choose this mode
Speaking of organizing your database, let’s take a look at the Resource Monitor mod.
This allows you to keep track of what items you have stored in the various containers on your base, and you don’t have to go back and forth to find what you have in stock.
The mod allows you to pull elements directly from the interface, making it much easier to input what you need.
22. Best Performance Info
Select this mode
With any improvements you make around the base, it’s also important to keep an eye on energy consumption.
After all, one of the most fundamental things in survival is to ensure that your base remains operational.
Modern BetterPowerInfo simplifies the processing of energy information by providing a more detailed menu for electricity production and consumption. The mod is very easy to use. You can access the information by simply pressing the P button.
21. Expansion of slots
Choose this mode
There’s a whole world outside your base, and I’m sure you spend most of your time outside.
However, there are a number of mods that can make exploring the depths easier. And the niche extender is one of many you’ll want to try.
You probably already know how useful Shimota’s and Shrimp’s costumes are…. but how much more useful could they be?
The expansion slot allows you to maximize both by giving you 8 additional slots for module upgrades.
20. Follow-up of drawings
Select this mode
Stock runs are an integral part of the game.
However, it’s not always as easy as it sounds, especially since you don’t always need just one thing.
Keeping track of everything you’ve been searching for can be quite overwhelming.
The blueprint finder makes things much easier by linking blueprints directly to your HUD, giving you a checklist of exactly what ingredients you’re looking for and how many you’re missing.
19. Scan correction data block
Select this mode
One of the most irritating bugs in the game was that the blips stayed on the screen when looting, even when the database was already open.
Worse, the new scanners sometimes recheck empty boxes, forcing you to go back to make sure you haven’t missed anything.
The DataBox Scanner Fix solves this problem. Shh, shh, shh.
18. Death Stamp
Select this mode
Survival games usually aim to make death much more painful – which, when you think about it, makes perfect sense when it comes to staying alive.
This usually means that death will result in the loss of everything you currently have in your inventory.
Normally the only way to get your stuff back is to go back to where you died, but Subnautica makes that particularly difficult too.
Many fans have asked for some sort of mark for your last place of death. And it looks like Mud Ovierus gave us exactly what we wanted.
17. Moon trailerVol
Choose this mode
Another way Subnautica makes survival even more difficult is by making you completely ineffective against certain types of enemies.
While you can kill some of the weakest creatures with one blade, you’ll find that many of the biggest enemies simply can’t be killed without the extra firepower.
This makes the vehicles in the game even more important.
Therefore, it is not easy to drive vehicles in the Subnautica region because it takes a lot of work to repair the damage.
MoonpoolVehicleRepair makes the job a little easier so you can keep your cars in perfect condition.
By installing the mod, you can perform vehicle repairs directly from your moon pool.
16. Cyclops Engine Upgrade
Select this mode
If your machines still don’t seem powerful enough, there are mods that can help.
Of course, there aren’t many vehicles in the game, so once you’ve unlocked and released Cyclops, there isn’t much you can do.
But this series of Cyclops mods offers you even more. In fact, it’s just a matter of updating your data to improve your sub.
The Cyclops Engine Upgrade specifically adds engine efficiency modules that reduce the submarine’s overall energy consumption.
15. CyclopNerFieldSonar
Select this mode
CyclopsNearFieldSonar is another extension you should get, as it makes navigating your environment much easier.
The mod gives Cyclops the same functionality as Seaglide and provides a visual representation of the subwoofer’s immediate surroundings.
This makes it much easier to move around and obstacles are much more visible.
14. Cyclops Bioreactor
Choose this mode
This other Cyclops update is also worth a try.
The mod allows you to build a miniature bioreactor integrated directly into the sub, so you can charge it on the go.
And the small bioreactor can even be upgraded over time.
13. Wind turbines
Choose this mode
Note that Cyclops is not the only one getting updates.
This module adds integrated wind turbines to the game to enhance the game’s solar panels.
They are beautiful and work much better than solar panels, but they are quite expensive. So you probably won’t get tired of it until the end of the game.
Still, they are worth upgrading because they produce much more energy than panels.
12. Technical pistol 2.0
Select this mode
Base and vehicle upgrades are excellent and all…. but that doesn’t really make you more effective against many enemy creatures.
But what if you want to fight back?
Mods allow you to add punches and a new weapon to the game.
The Tech Pistol is an option, and while it seems much smaller than the others, don’t underestimate its power.
The gun has three shooting modes – pistol, laser and balance. The first two are self-explanatory, but the third changes the size of the creature when it is shot.
11. Foreign Rifle
Choose this mode
If you’ve explored most of the map, you’ve probably stumbled upon this strange relic, enclosed in some sort of protective green barrier in a quarantine structure.
Apparently it was a gun made with alien technology. Unfortunately, we can’t get it out of the container.
Except this way, you get another weapon to use against the Reapers.
10. Laser rifle
Choose this mode
If you prefer not to get too close to scary sea creatures, this laser gun mod may be a wise choice.
The mod allows you to use Seamoth as a weapon and gives you access to a brand new update module.
By installing this mod, you will be able to obtain a set of laser cannons located at the front of the ship, which will make it much easier to fight against certain enemies without putting yourself in danger.
9. Antique sword
Choose this mode
There’s nothing like hacking and hacking your way through more powerful creatures…. But that’s not possible with the little survival knife the game gives you.
The Old Sword is a much better option for the melee, and is much more comfortable to use than laser fire.
8. Passive documents
Choose this mode
On the other hand, we have a solution here for a more pacifist audience.
Sometimes you just want to go your own way and explore this exciting new world undisturbed – and there’s nothing wrong with that.
If you’re looking for a more relaxed experience exploring Subnautica, passive reapers should do the trick.
They may come and take a look, but they will never attack you as long as this mod is installed.
Note that the mode only affects the reapers, so everything else remains the same.
7. Random creation size
Choose this mode
Before we get into the more serious gameplay mods for Subnautica, here are a few fun little mods you can try to spice things up a bit.
It may not help, but it’s time. It creates creatures of random size.
Just set a size range, and the enemies propagate with a randomly generated size within the set parameters.
6. Decoration Mod
Choose this mode
If you’ve ever seen Castaway, you know how the desert can affect your state of mind.
While sanity is not a determining factor in Subnautica, wouldn’t it be nice if you could decorate your base during your stay?
This fashion is all you need to decorate. It adds a brand new Manufacturer that lets you build 118 new items.
The package includes dolls, plants, toys and even furniture.
5. Ready-mixed pavement
Choose this mode
Speaking of Maker, this next mod will radically change the way you play.
You get a universal manufacturer that essentially combines all Fabricator gaming machines into one.
You no longer have to go back and forth between manufacturers depending on what you want to build, as everything can easily be built from one place.
4. Deflator
Select this mode
Mistakes are an inevitable part of the game. Especially if you’ve had access to this boat for a long time.
This is not a good thing if you are creating, because sources are not easy to find.
The Defrabricator mod is the solution we all need. Allows you to recycle items with a simple click.
Each item can be customized and resources returned to your inventory. Incredibly convenient.
3. Independent lifeboat
Select this mode
Lifepod Unleashed is by far one of the most interesting mods. And it’s a great way to make your next game even more exciting.
The mod will cause your pod to propagate to a random location on the map immediately after starting a new game.
Like I said, it’s great for players who want to make another breakthrough. So I don’t recommend using it the first time, but definitely the second or third time.
2. CheatManager
Choose this mode
Almost all open-world games with mod support have some sort of cheat menu that allows you to control various things in the game.
Subnautica is no different.
And the CheatManager is a great way to have fun when you don’t feel like playing a serious survival game.
With the CheatManager you can instantly switch from day to night, unlock all hardware and speed up your Seaglide.
The modder even added some nice extra features, like flying the Seamoth or unlocking the gun to shoot down the Reapers.
1. Realistic income and increased difficulty
Select this mode
If you want to be able to play again, I recommend trying the Realistic Recipes and Increased Difficulty modes.
It is specifically designed for players who are looking for a much more challenging game.
The mod increases the difficulty by changing the values of the shots to make them more realistic. This usually means that regulations are more demanding and the emphasis is on inventory management.
Again, this is a great opportunity for those looking for a challenge. So I wouldn’t recommend it if you’re a brand new player.
